Our Purpose

My Story

Chronic pain, fatigue, and unpredictable crises associated with SCD can contribute to feelings of isolation, helplessness, and hopelessness.

Two years ago, I faced a crushing pain crisis that drove me to the brink of despair. Overwhelmed by unbearable pain and a sense of hopelessness, I contemplated ending my life. The physical agony, coupled with the emotional toll of frequent hospitalizations, job insecurity, and the constant feeling of being misunderstood, felt insurmountable. I was exhausted, both physically and emotionally.

In a moment of desperation, I reached out to my therapist, a lifeline that ultimately saved me. He recognized my deep depression, and through therapy and medication, I began to heal. I discovered that my experiences were not unique, and that emotional stress significantly impacted my physical health. Learning coping strategies and positive affirmations helped me find balance.

This transformative experience revealed a critical gap: mental health support is often absent from sickle cell disease (SCD) treatment plans. Recognizing the immense benefit therapy offered me, I felt compelled to help others. After research and consultations, I founded The Crescent Initiative for Sickle Cell, determined to provide vital mental health resources to the SCD community.
